Election 2005 in Sri Lanka

The Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka was chosen to be the candidate of his party for the 2005 presidential elections.

In September he had opened his campaign with huge amounts of posters trying to establish him with the phrase "Mahinda" will bring prosperity.

At the same time discussions had started about his private $80 million Tsunami fund which had been taken from the international $3 billion tsunami donations.

Later Mahinda declared, that the $80 had been given back. But nevertheless, visitors of the Island wonder why still so many victims have to live in tents almost 1 year after the flood.

But that is only one out of many issues, that have kept the presidential race hot and open until the last minute.
